Merthyr Road New Farm

Through the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, LANDSCAPE workshop have been working with Client: Griffith Group and Architect: Twohill and James one the planting design for a new multi-level commercial building on Merthyr Road in New Farm, Brisbane.

The planting concepts exploit the various microclimates created beneath, in and among, around and on-top-of the built form. It is this site-specific response that shapes an iconic and memorable botanical experience.

The clean, efficient lines and surfaces created by the architecture are complimented by the full, lush planting bursting from every nook and cranny. The street-level panting draws upon the globally significant biodiversity of rainforests. The native understory is supplemented with a few favourites from similar climates around the world.

The rooftop terrace is a noticeably different horticultural zone, incorporating a complimentary suite of plants from coastal heath, mediterranean and arid climates across Australia and abroad.

Large pots are planted with old, sculptural olive trees and underplanted with a bouquet of our favourite Mediterranean herbs.

The perimeter around the edge of the terrace is planted with a diverse mix of sun-loving grasses, ground covers, shrubs and vines, designed to spill up, out and over the edge of the built form.
